Social tagging effect on the learning process - Cognition .
Social tagging is defined as the activity of annotating and classifying digital resources with keywords (tags ). Most web-based information systems use tagging for the collaborative records of vast amounts of information (Lavoue (2011)
The study of Lavoue, found that students cognitive processes were stimulated through tagging, where they effectively questioned their tags (more their documents), possibly due to the comparison to other group members . They added that collaborative work negotiation within the groups also seem to provoke a questioning of their tags and a modification of tags and documents.
They suggested tagging supports the learning process, and that it could be more used on educational web-based systems, for it helps in the synthesis of main ideas and/ or concepts, enhance students’ reflection on their own concepts ( creating ownership), idea or concept assimilation ; and creation of relations between concepts. Study suggested the use of tags to be used within collaborative activities to enhance learning of new concepts .
Moreover, Tagging has been proven to be a meta cognitive strategy in the process of learning, and is a way to get students involved in the learning process and effectively engage in learning activities . It helps learners to memorize better, hep them clear and clarify content to make sense of what they are learning . Tagged pages could give learners an idea on how important is the content of the web page and what is the content basically about .( Klasnja-Milicevic, 2018)
